The Athole House Studio
Self-Isolation Artist Residency
30th March 2020 - 7th November 2021

Picture
Over my career I have taken part in many artist residencies in various parts of the world; I have even organised and run a residency program myself. 2020 has brought new challenges to us all, I however intend to treat these challenges as opportunities. With this in mind today, the first day of my self-isolation having arrived back from my studio in the Untied States last night, I I launch my new blog which will become an integral part of this website as I redesign is over the coming weeks.

Artist Residencies give artists the space and perhaps more importantly the time to make new work; I intend to treat my time in self-isolation in the same way that I would if I were on an artist residency in another studio in another part of the world. Athole House Studio maybe one of my home studios but for me it is a work space, and lets face it, we all now have the time.

Tonight marks something of a watershed on the Self Isolation Residency, it was 10 weeks ago this evening that I returned to Scotland from my studio on the States and I started this residency program the next day. As time has progressed I have introduced many new, and old, ideas into these post and with the idea of keeping things fresh and interesting. I am continually reviewing what I do and how I present it to you, the observer. With this in mind I have decided at this point to change the format of my blog somewhat primarily to try to improve its content. I had considered reducing my postings from daily to weekly, or at least to 3 times a week. But through discussions with my closest colleagues and peers I have decided upon a new direction for the blog which will allow me to continue to post on a daily basis but in a different way and with what I hope will be a different and more valuable result. As previously I will continue to present a mixture of reviews of brand new and archive works from my portfolio, often leaning heavily on works from my #artistsupportpledge catalogue. I will however expand the way that I use this medium to post blogs that are much more about image only, as this is very much where the Internets strength lies. Some of these images may be self-explanatory whereas other may have a single statement or question attached to them.

The inspiration behind this idea, and I must at this stage thank my friend and colleague Mark Green for his suggestions in this area, is heavily entwined with John Berger's excellent TV series and book, 'Ways of Seeing'. This is a book that pretty much 'says it all on the tin', we will be from here on considering in much greater depth how an image can transmit an idea and how and if we respond to it,

To begin this process I am tonight continuing with an image of 'Composition in White (Sculpture) but on this occasion with a working images as it were, something I seldom post but something that I am happy to use on this occasion to begin or sustain  a dialogue about images and how they work. Over the next few posts please look out for a series of posts that will continue this idea through full blog posts, images, questions and ideas.
