The paintings in the Apophenia Series are wholly abstract, emerging from personal experience and memory rather than from direct observation. They are conceived as propositions rather than representations, inviting viewers to interrogate the assumptions through which they organise visual experience. The works present forms that evoke an uncanny familiarity while resisting definitive identification. This oscillation between recognition and indeterminacy destabilises fixed perception, encouraging the observer to question the reliability of their own interpretative impulses.

For some time I have experienced a growing disaffection with painting, a medium that has nonetheless remained central to my practice. During lockdown in early 2021, as part of the Self-Isolation Residency, I developed a project titled Finding a Reason to Paint.

​During the development of the Personal Topographies series, abstract spaces increasingly became inhabited by ambiguous presences. These manifestations were not intended as figurative representations, nor were they entirely accidental. Emerging from the painted surface through successive acts of construction and erasure, they occupied a liminal position between object and entity, landscape and inhabitant.

As part of the reflective process undertaken during the Self-Isolation Residency, it became increasingly apparent to me how profoundly travel had shaped my practice. The mobility afforded by international exhibitions, residencies, and research trips had become not merely supplementary but constitutive of my working methodology. Equally, the sudden deprivation of these opportunities during lockdown revealed the extent to which movement, encounter, and displacement had functioned as generative conditions within my work. Confronted with enforced stasis, I was compelled to reassess the sources from which my practice derives its momentum.

In 2020, I was compelled to return from the United States, bringing my Americana Project to an abrupt conclusion due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the flight back to Scotland, I resolved to use the enforced self-isolation that lay ahead as an opportunity for sustained reflection upon my creative practice. Rather than viewing this interruption as an obstacle, I consciously chose to regard it as a valuable opportunity for artistic inquiry and development.

The paintings in this series are executed in richly impastoed oil paint, applied exclusively with a palette knife. This approach produces highly textured surfaces that verge on bas-relief, creating a tactile quality that blurs the boundary between two- and three-dimensional forms.
