Pilgrimage, Workhouse Exhibition,

There are many theories about the origins of the labyrinth although it certainly seems to date back to ancient Greece or perhaps earlier. However my installation is actually based on a probable use of the form in Medieval Europe. It is thought that Medieval Labyrinths and turf mazes may have been used as a substitute for walking the pilgrim path to Jerusalem.

I have produced a series of floor based installation pieces over the years beginning with Floorplan in Helsinki earlier on 2010. When I visited the exhibition space at Hive I was very fortunate that it was completely empty, a totally blank canvas I say completely empty but there was a small amount of hazard tape outlining elements of the floor; doorways, steps etc. This, combined with the theme of the exhibition and all of these other elements that were in my mind falling Floorplan suggested the idea of the Labyrinth to me.
