Apophenia:
An Uncanny Presence.
2022-

Picture
Whilst exploring painted spaces via my Personal Topographies series I was constantly aware that the next development in this painted process would be the introduction of abstract presences. Although I have been using the word presence to denote the manifestations in my work, I am now wondering if it is perhaps the best word to use. If the presence in question is always, pseudo human should I be considering the idea of anthropomorphism instead? Or perhaps in more global terms pareidolia? Or more properly apophenia?

Sculpture 360: ‘Womb’.

The womb is ready...

‘Womb’ is the working title of a project which I began during covid and towards the end of the Self-Isolation Residency; but one which I have not had the opportunity to explore fully due to the constraints of having to travel so much over the last couple of years. Now that I’m finally back in my studio full-time, its philosophy, along with its connection to my abstract work on apophenia, has brought it back into full focus.

The larger project of which ‘Womb’, is the principal component, Sculpture 360, as the title says is an attempt to explore a form of ‘gravity’ free sculpture. All true sculpture, except relief, should be appreciable from any point within the round. The ethos behind ‘Womb’ is to explore new and unique ways for both the exhibition and creation of sculpture. Ways in which the form can be both regarded and shaped from any direction, including from ‘below’. (I have framed the word ‘below’ in inverted commas he to show my deliberate misuse of it. The abstract sculptures ‘grown’ within these ‘wombs’ will have no directional planes, therefore within this context the word below is meaningless).

Over the course of the next few days, weeks and months I will post updates as the form and project grows and develops towards maturation and birth.
