The Athole House Studio
Self-Isolation Artist Residency
30th March 2020 - 7th November 2021

Picture
Over my career I have taken part in many artist residencies in various parts of the world; I have even organised and run a residency program myself. 2020 has brought new challenges to us all, I however intend to treat these challenges as opportunities. With this in mind today, the first day of my self-isolation having arrived back from my studio in the Untied States last night, I I launch my new blog which will become an integral part of this website as I redesign is over the coming weeks.

Artist Residencies give artists the space and perhaps more importantly the time to make new work; I intend to treat my time in self-isolation in the same way that I would if I were on an artist residency in another studio in another part of the world. Athole House Studio maybe one of my home studios but for me it is a work space, and lets face it, we all now have the time.

'The Constant Library',  Volume VI: "Pale Fire.", Vladimir Nabokov.'

"The idea for 'The Constant Library' follows on from a recent conversation considering which books had, and continue to have, the greatest affect my life in a variety of different ways. These are the books I can't live without and whenever possible I have a copy of with me wherever I travel in the world.; my 'Constant Library."

I find it quite interesting the it has taken up to entry number VI in 'The Constant Library' before I added my first actual novel. This might make you think that I read very little fiction but that's really not true at all. On the whole I try to balance my literary consumption by reading a works of fiction alternately with nonfiction. However as I have mentioned previous I do enjoy compilations of short stories, so they are often my fiction 'go-to'.

'Pale Fire' will always be a staple of my literary diet. For me it shows Nabokov at his best. Forget about 'Lolita', that book is all about 'shock value', it meanders along at a snails pace with just the odd racy section to progress it. 'Pale Fire' is by contrast both a well considered read and piece of writing, it's a book that really allows the reader in insight into the psyche of the author. It isn't what could be called an easy read, but then for me anything worth reading seldom is. It is however a gratifying read as it builds and weaves characters, histories and 'stories' together to reach it's fascinating climax. Highly recommended.

'I'm just going to leave this here...No:37', "Memoriam Bream".

Picture
I'm so very sad to be marking the loss of a second of my favorite musicians in just a few days, the guitar playing of Julian Bream, often along with John Williams, has been a studio companion of mine for decades. He'll be sadly missed but he will always continue to play in my studio and in my heart.

'The Constant Library',  Volume V: "Ways of seeing.", John Berger.'

"The idea for 'The Constant Library' follows on from a recent conversation considering which books had, and continue to have, the greatest affect my life in a variety of different ways. These are the books I can't live without and whenever possible I have a copy of with me wherever I travel in the world.; my 'Constant Library."

As a fundamental guide understanding art in the contemporary state, and I use that phrase deliberately as opposed to contemporary art, the is possibly no better place to start that with John Berger's 'Ways of Seeing'. I  have in the past posted about the 1970's TV series on which the book is based; and in fairness the series is probably better than the book. The book however, being a slim paperback, is in some ways more portable that the TV series, although with 'Youtube' on smart phones now perhaps that is not true anymore. For the best experience I would recommend watching series and reading the book at the same time.

Berger's approach is an old one but put forward in a new way; he enables even the layman to begin to understand the complexities of the painted image in opposition to photography or film by defining the 'uniqueness' of the art image as opposed to the mechanically reproduced.
