Residuum
The Holden Gallery
Manchester School of Art
Manchester UK 2009

During Tension's deinstallation process I became aware that the delicate material surfaces had accumulated a fine histoical layer of dust, a physical record of the time the installation had occupied the gallery space. When carefully wound into compact forms, the material preserved this residue along with pockets of gallery air trapped between its layers.

These objects, initially titled Artifacts, became more than discarded remnants of the installation. They operated instead as condensed traces of the work’s duration, atmosphere, and physical history. Exhibited later within the same gallery, they carried with them evidence of a prior event while simultaneously questioning where the artwork itself truly resides.

In process-based art practice, the act of making is often considered as significant as, or more significant than, the final object. From this perspective, the artwork is not simply a finished product to be viewed in isolation, but the visible residue of a longer sequence of actions, decisions, experiences, and transformations. Residuum reflects this idea by presenting the material aftermath of an ephemeral installation as both document and artifact.

The work therefore raises questions about permanence, value, and authorship, while also suggesting that art may ultimately exist less within static objects than within processes, encounters, memory, and altered perception.
