Trafford College Residency
Trafford College Cheshire UK 2011-2012
Reflection on how students at the college attain a form of “prominence” through their education and achievements provided the conceptual foundation for this work. Both former and current students were invited to reflect on the ways in which their time at Trafford College had shaped their personal and intellectual development, as well as expanded their future prospects.

Reflection on how students at the college attain a form of “prominence” through their education and achievements provided the conceptual foundation for this work. Both former and current students were invited to reflect on the ways in which their time at Trafford College had shaped their personal and intellectual development, as well as expanded their future prospects.
Selected quotations drawn from these reflections were subsequently incorporated into the wall panels, where they function not only as a testament to the experiences and accomplishments of past students, but also as a source of encouragement and aspiration for the present student body. The wall panels themselves operate as foundational elements, or “bedrock,” symbolically evoking the college’s role in supporting and sustaining its students. From this base, kite-like structures emerge and ascend overhead, representing the students as they rise, propelled by their education, toward positions of greater visibility and achievement.
This upward movement suggests both momentum and possibility, capturing the dynamic process through which individuals extend beyond the institution and into broader futures. Taken together, the installation articulates a cohesive visual metaphor for growth, support, and aspiration, underscoring the transformative capacity of education to elevate individuals toward new horizons.
