The mathematical elegance of the A-series paper system has long held a particular fascination for me. Equally significant is the ubiquity of the A4 sheet itself: an object so standardised and commonplace that its underlying mathematical complexity often goes unnoticed. Over the years I have returned repeatedly to the A4 format within my practice, drawn both to its familiarity and to the precision of its proportional logic. During the development of an earlier work utilising the A4 form, I began studying the mathematics embedded within its dimensions and discovered that the perimeter of a standard A4 sheet measures approximately 1.14 metres, only fourteen millimetres greater than one metre. Although this measurement is an inevitable consequence of the geometric relationships governing the A-series system, I became increasingly intrigued by the near coincidence of the form approaching, yet never fully attaining, an exact metre perimeter.

This observation initiated a process of speculative and material inquiry centred on the question of adjustment: how might the perimeter be altered to equal precisely one metre? Among the numerous possible interventions, the two simplest proved the most compelling, removing a strip measuring seven millimetres from either the width or the length of the sheet. These subtle modifications appealed to me not only because of their formal economy, but because they produced two distinct manifestations of the same mathematical resolution while simultaneously generating two different surface areas. The intervention is minimal, almost imperceptible, yet it fundamentally transforms the conditions of the object.
Presented side by side, the two altered sheets function as both sculptural objects and conceptual propositions. They articulate an engagement with systems of measurement, standardisation, and mathematical abstraction, while also foregrounding the poetic potential contained within acts of minute alteration. The work operates through tension: between precision and approximation, universality and individuality, inevitability and choice. By taking an object designed for consistency and introducing a barely visible deviation, the piece exposes the instability hidden within systems typically understood as fixed or absolute.

Ultimately, the work is less concerned with arriving at a singular solution than with revealing the generative possibilities embedded within constraint itself. The altered sheets represent only two outcomes among an infinite field of potential resolutions, emphasising the relationship between logic, decision-making, and material consequence. Through this process, the familiar A4 sheet is transformed from a neutral and functional object into a site of contemplation, where mathematics becomes both a structural language and a means of poetic inquiry.
